List of eye drops for newborns and children by year: antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic

Eye drops for children are often the same drugs used for the treatment of adults, the effectiveness of which must be proven, and the risk of possible development of complications is minimal.

All ophthalmic preparations are made according to certain requirements. Drops for eyes for children must meet a number of conditions - be sterile, do not contain impurities and toxic substances, have a concentration that meets the standards.

Learn also how to treat conjunctivitis in newborns with drops, from an article by an ophthalmologist.

A detailed description by a specialist of how to drop drops into the eyes of a newborn is safe and without any problems for the mother and child.

Antibiotic eye drops

Most antibacterial eye drops are forbidden to use in the fight against the infectious process occurring in children. Microorganisms with improper and impractical use of antibacterial drops tend to mutate, which, against the background of inhibition of the eye’s own microflora, allows new strains to arise, and this leads to the development of a chronic, sluggish disease.

Allergic reactions can also be triggered by the use of sufficiently strong drugs in excess doses. An undesirable effect is, despite local use, side effects of drugs.

Sulfacyl Sodium Eye Drops (Albucid)

Applied with inflammatory diseases caused by staphylococcal, streptococcal, gonococcal and chlamydial flora in children.

Albucidine buried in the eyes of the child with bacterial conjunctivitis, as well as with bacterial and traumatic keratitis. This tool can be used from birth.

If you drop the drops in your eyes, almost immediately there is a burning sensation, which passes quickly enough.

Instillation mode may vary. In severe cases, albumin is instilled frequently, almost hourly, or 1 time every 2 hours for 10 days.

Eye drops, antibacterial action of which is possible due to the main component - tobramycin (macrolide).

Apply Tobrex eye drops for newborns from the first hours, carrying out the prevention of gonococcal infection. At the same time 1 drop of the drug drip once in each eye.

Recommended regimen for the treatment of purulent conjunctivitis, keratitis and blepharitis: drip into the eyes drop by drop every 2 hours and 7 days.

Frequency of reception, as well as the replacement of the drug, controls the ophthalmologist.

Levomycetin - 0.25% eye drops

Levomycetin drops are a successful combination that combines both chloramphenicol and orthoboric acid.

Recommended its use in the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis, keratitis, dacryocystitis, barley.

Instructions for use of the drug indicates that the child can only bury these drops when it reaches the age of 2 years.

In newborns, levomycetin can be used only in cases where there are no alternatives, when this is the only chance to preserve the organ of vision and visual functions.

Levomycetin is instilled drop by drop into the inflamed eye every 3 to 4 hours for 14 days. Features of the reception should be agreed with the ophthalmologist to control the occurrence of side effects.

Levomitsetin has side effects, manifested by impaired blood (leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, aplastic anemia), allergic reactions. In case of overdose, kidney impairment is noted.

A drug containing fluoroquinolone ciprofloxacin.

Mostly in children, they are used in cases of neglected bacterial inflammatory processes or in severe infections. Tsiprolet allowed to apply to children older than 1 year. It is necessary to adhere to the mode of application: drop by drop into the affected eye up to 6 times a day for 10 days.

Tsiprolet should be used after consultation with an ophthalmologist.

Early cessation of admission leads to the formation of specific bacteria resistant to the drugs of this series. As a result, the process becomes chronic.

Ciprolet is not used for viral etiology diseases that are not complicated by the bacterial component, since the condition may be aggravated due to the suppression of the eye’s own microflora and the addition of infection.

Tsiprolet contains components that can develop allergic manifestations.

The drug has an antiseptic effect, allowing it to be considered both as antiviral drops and as a weak antibacterial and antifungal agent.

Due to the ability to affect the bacterial, viral and fungal nature of Vitabact, it is necessary to use in severe cases in combination with powerful antibacterial drugs.

Remember that the drug has a weak antimicrobial effect compared with antibacterial drugs, so its use as a primary tool for purulent processes may have undesirable consequences.

Vitabact is applied drop by drop every 2 hours for 14 days under the supervision of an ophthalmologist.

Vitabact has a number of side effects, mainly due to allergies to components. Vitabact before instillation should be slightly warmed in the hand, so that the bottle and its contents acquire body temperature.

Allergy Eye Drops for Children

The use of antiallergic eye drops is only a symptomatic method of treatment and can only be used as a method of adjuvant therapy.

Adult eye drops are practically not used for children with allergies. Most drops contain substances that can harm a child’s body. For example, droplets containing steroid and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory substances are often used in adults.

Vasoconstrictor drops reduce edema by narrowing the vessels. There are also nasal drops used in the common cold. They are shown to be used by children who have turned 3 years old, since the droplets are sufficiently well absorbed and may cause the narrowing of larger vessels, which leads to the development of collaptoid states and fainting.

Eye drops from allergies, the use of which is allowed in children

1. Allergodil - a drug that allows to cope with conjunctivitis of an allergic nature in children 4 years and older. Its action is aimed at blocking the histamine H-1 receptors. The recommended regimen is the use of the drug drop by drop every 3 to 4 hours. The duration of use is monitored by an ophthalmologist.

2. Occupied - the combined preparation possessing antiseptic, antiallergic properties. The use of children allowed two years and older. Dig in drop by drop every 3 to 4 hours.

Remember that before using antiallergic drops, you should consult an ophthalmologist and an allergist for a full course of therapy, allowing you to stabilize the condition and achieve a stable remission.

Indications for using eye drops for children

The smaller the age of the baby, the more soft drops should be selected. Also, the tool should be hypoallergenic and have as few side effects as possible.

In inflammatory processes, the ophthalmologist prescribes eye drops for children. As a rule, if a child's eyes fester, there is swelling, this indicates the presence of an infectious disease:

  • adenovirus infection (we recommend reading: effective treatment of adenovirus infection in children),
  • pneumococcal, staphylococcal, herpes infection,
  • measles,
  • diphtheria,
  • In some cases, the cause is an allergy to pollen, dust, deodorants or drugs.

List of best products for children

Many eye drops and solutions have an age limit, so you should read the instructions before use. Drops for instillation into the eyes have a different spectrum of action:

  • antibacterial,
  • antiviral,
  • antihistamines,
  • moisturizing ("artificial tear").

Moisturizing "artificial tears"

Moisturizing drops "artificial tear" are used to prevent eye diseases and protect against negative external influences of the environment (air conditioning, dust and small particles). They imitate natural tearing, moisturize the mucous membrane, eliminate redness of the white of the eye. Despite the safety of such drops, they can not be used without a doctor's prescription.

  • Vizin Classic. The drug is approved for use from 2 years. It relieves irritation, fatigue and redness well. Perhaps its use in seasonal allergic reactions, with pollinosis.
  • Vizin Pure tear. The tool is very similar in composition to a human tear, so it is safe even for newborns. He has no age limit. Bury these drops for dry and irritated eyes.

Antimicrobial agents

If the baby's eye is affected by viruses, bacteria or a fungus, do not do without antimicrobial drops. They can also be prescribed for the prevention of infectious diseases, if there is a high probability of infection.

The main diseases for which antibacterial drops are prescribed:

  • dacryocystitis
  • barley,
  • blepharitis
  • keratitis and chalazion,
  • conjunctivitis and others

A child can become infected with them when in contact with a sick person, the infection joins after trauma and surgeries.

You also need to determine the sensitivity of pathogenic bacteria to antibiotics for the appointment of adequate therapy. The choice of eye drops in a pharmacy is quite large, the doctor will select the drug, depending on the disease and age of the baby:

  • Tobreks (we recommend to read: how to apply "Tobreks" for newborns?). It can also be used from the first days of a baby’s life. Especially often it is prescribed for gonococcal infection, although the area of its action is quite wide.
  • Sulfacyl sodium (Albucid). These are eye drops for newborns, they are effective in infectious diseases caused by streptococci, staphylococci, gonococci and chlamydia. It is this remedy that babies are buried in the maternity hospital (20% solution) in order to protect against conjunctivitis and other infectious diseases.

  • Tsiprolet. Appointed to children over 1 year. It is effective in chronic and severe bacterial infections. It is forbidden to use in diseases of viral nature. May cause burning sensation, excessive tearing. It has a number of serious contraindications, so its use should be recommended by a doctor.
  • Levomitsetin 0,25%. Treats bacterial conjunctivitis, barley, keratitis and other diseases caused by a large spectrum of bacteria. However, the drug has long been used in therapy, so some microorganisms have developed resistance to it. It is used with caution in the smallest children, because the drops are completely harmless and can cause serious side reactions.
  • Oftan I am coming. They are not prescribed for babies under 2 years old. These are antiviral drops, have a good anti-herpes action. In addition, they are used in the treatment of keratitis.
  • Vitabact (we recommend to read: how to use Vitabact eye drops for children?). The drug fights viruses well, has a weak antibacterial and antifungal effect. It can be used in newborns both in the treatment and in the prevention of inflammatory diseases. Due to the fact that the effect of the drug is only local, it usually does not provoke the occurrence of side effects.

Anti-inflammatory drugs

All antimicrobial drugs relieve inflammation by suppressing and killing the pathogen. In addition, steroid (hormonal) and nonsteroidal drugs have anti-inflammatory effects:

  • Tobradex. Contains dexamethasone and antibiotic, has a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect. Used to treat blepharitis, conjunctivitis, keratitis in children older than 1 year.
  • Sofradex. It contains two types of antibiotic and glucocorticoid dexamethasone. It is used in barley, infected with eczema of the eyelids, allergic conjunctivitis. Newborn babies are prescribed with great care, if only the use of the use outweighs the possible risk of complications.

Steroid and nonsteroid eye drops are more commonly used in the treatment of adults, since they have many side effects. As a rule, they are not prescribed for children under 7 years old.

Drops newborn from pus in the eyes

If a child's eyes fester, there is redness, then various infectious diseases can be the cause:

  • dacryocystitis
  • conjunctivitis,
  • adenovirus infection
  • measles,
  • pneumococcal, staphylococcal, herpetic infections,
  • diphtheria and others

The treatment is carried out with the help of antimicrobial and antiviral eye drops (Albucidum, Collargol, Vitabact), aimed specifically at the pathogen that caused the inflammation. If suppuration and discharge from the eyes is a symptom of another disease, ophthalmic drops are used as an adjunct in complex therapy.

Allocation of pus accompanies and allergic reactions, including seasonal. Antihistamine drops will help eliminate this symptom, but for high-quality therapy you need to find and eliminate the allergen.

With allergies will be effective:

  • Lecrolin It is forbidden to apply to children under 4 years. It relieves the symptoms of allergies well, quickly brings relief, while not a hormonal drug.
  • Allergodil. It is also used only from 4 years of age. Effective in the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis.

Eye Wash Solutions

Usually, the baby is washed with an antiseptic solution before instillation. To do this, apply:

  • Penicillin. This is a very effective and well-known antiseptic. It comes in powder form and is diluted in the right proportion, which is better specified in the instructions for the preparation. Penicillin should be used with caution for allergy sufferers and not prescribed in case of individual intolerance to penicillin.
  • Furacilin. It has an antimicrobial effect. It is diluted in a ratio of 1 tablet (2 tablets - for adults) to 100 ml of pure warm boiled water.

Manifestations of the inflammatory process of the eye

It is necessary to clarify that the causes of inflammation of the membranes of the eye can be bacteria, viruses, an allergic reaction to various foreign agents. The inflammatory process of an allergic nature, as a rule, is not characteristic of a newborn. For its development, you need enough time and repeated contact with the allergen.

The inflammation caused by bacteria is manifested by redness and swelling of the eyelid, expansion of the vascular network of the protein part of the eye, tear and suppuration. As a result, the pus dries and glues the cilia. This is accompanied by an itch, a feeling of poured sand, a foreign body in the eye.

It gives the baby, of course, discomfort, and he will show it with anxiety, capricious behavior. The child will constantly pull the handle to the eyes, try to rub his eyes. Especially swollen and "swim" pus baby's eyes after sleep. Often the child can not open eyes because of glued eyelashes. It is simply impossible to look at it calmly.

And in such cases, if it is not possible to immediately consult a doctor, parents need to look for information on their own, but not on mommies' forums, but on specialized sites, where there are expert recommendations and sensible explanations of what is possible and what is not.

With inflammation of the conjunctiva of the eye of a viral nature, the changes are almost the same as in the bacterial process. The difference is that the disease is preceded by a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract. From the first days there is a lacrimation, and then pus can appear in the eyes. Everything goes in combination with swelling of the nasal mucosa, as the nose and the eye communicate with the nasolacrimal duct.

Often viral conjunctivitis is complicated by the addition of bacteria to the inflammatory process. This is due to the fact that viruses seem to disarm the site on which any bacterium will then freely sit down. What process flows in your child can only be told by the doctor, after having examined and examined the baby.

All this is necessary to know in order to accidentally, for example, on the advice of a girlfriend, not to treat the bacterial process with antiviral drops or vice versa. It is necessary to competently approach the choice of drugs and be guided by the principle of "do no harm."

It is worth noting that very often in newborns dacryocystitis (inflammation of the lacrimal sac) occurs due to blockage of the nasolacrimal canal. As a rule, the cause of this condition is an innate spike (film) in the lacrimal canal cavity.

By itself, dacryocystitis does not bring the child either anxiety, or pain, or itching, or visual disturbances.

However, the presence of such a spike leads to stagnation of tears in the eyes of the baby. And if there is no adequate outflow of tear fluid, sooner or later the bacterial flora will join.

If this does not happen, the eyes constantly swim in, and the treatment gives a short-term effect, then they resort to surgical treatment (sensing) of the canal with a special probe.

The best way to avoid sensing the nasal canal is to regularly carry out a tear-sac massage to your baby. The task of the massage is to increase the pressure in the canal to break through the commissure and allow the outflow of tear fluid.

How to wash eyes newborn

For washing the eyes, furatsilin is used more often than chamomile decoction and brewed tea. And this is correct, since furatsilin is an antimicrobial agent. Furacilin is available in the form of an aqueous solution and in tablets that parents need to dissolve on their own.

Dissolve tablets long enough. It is better to pre-grind them. It will save you time. The concentration of the solution - 100 ml of warm (37 ° C) boiled water need one tablet of furatsilina.

Wash your hands with soap and water before rinsing your eyes. Moisten a sterile cotton swab with furatsilinom so that the solution does not drip from it.
Wipe the eye from the outer edge of the eye toward the nose, slightly moving the lower eyelid.

For each eye, use a new swab. Rinse eyes 3-4 times a day.

If there is too much discharge of the lacrimal canal, it is often necessary to wipe the eye, but the effect is still short-term, then it is necessary to squeeze out the accumulated contents from the lacrimal canal before washing.

To do this, you need to hold several times, slightly pressing, along the edge of the nose bridge towards the eye (bottom to top). The procedure, of course, is incomprehensible and not very pleasant for the child, but the eye will remain clean longer.

How to use eye drops:

  1. Wash your hands with soap.
  2. Open the bottle so that the dropper tip does not touch anything. Otherwise, contamination of the solution will occur.
  3. Lock the baby's head. You can swaddle him.
  4. Hold the bottle upside down in one hand, and with the other hand open the child's eyes, drawing off the lower eyelid.
  5. Keep the dropper close to the eye, without touching, dripping the medicine into the space between the eyeball and the eyelid.
  6. Release the lower eyelid and let the child blink. This contributes to the complete distribution of the drug over the surface of the eye.
  7. Repeat on the other eye points 4, 5 and 6, if necessary.
    8. After use, close the vial tightly.
  8. Wash your hands after the procedure, as you can infect your loved ones by contact.

Antibacterial drops

Are used for the treatment of infections caused by bacteria.

Usually the active substances in them are antibiotics or sulfonamides.

Among these drugs worth noting Albucid, Tobreks, Tauradex, Tsipromed, Fucitalmik.

Antiviral drugs

The main of these drugs is interferon.

They are directed to strengthen the body's protective resources and increase the production of antibodies to eliminate viruses, provoking conjunctivitis and other diseases.

These include Aktipol, Florenal, TebrofenOphthalmoferon.

Also can be used ointment Zovirax.

Allergy drops

If pathology peephole wears allergic nature then antihistamine medicines are usedthat eliminate the effects of allergic irritation.

Antihistamines include Phenystyle, ZyrtecWOdac, Oftalmol, Prevalin.

Solutions are also divided into therapeutic and prophylactic.

The latter are used in allergic reactions or in viral epidemics. They also include moisturizers and vitamins for the eyes.

Solutions for the treatment of pus in the eyes

If your baby's eyes fester, and wherein appears redness then the cause may be various infectious diseases:

  • adenovirus infection
  • hermetic, staphylococcal, pneumococcal infections,
  • diphtheria, etc.

Antiviral and antimicrobial drops are used for the treatment.such as Vitabact, Albucidum, Collargol.

If the cause of suppuration is another disease, then the drops are used as an additional tool in complex treatment.

In this case, antihistamine drops are used., but it is also important to identify the allergen and eliminate contact with it.

Features of instillation

Before digging usually recommended wash eyes baby antiseptic solution.

For this, Furacilin, Penicillin, decoctions of medicinal plants can be used.

Before using drops, you need to wash hands thoroughly.

Useful video

From this video you will learn how to bury eyes with babies:

Drops - the main toolused by for the treatment of eye diseases in children.

They act locally on the affected area and usually do not enter the bloodstream, so they can be used even for the smallest ones.

But in the case of infants, drug selection is a particularly important task., so a doctor should do this.

How to use drops?

The first thing to do is to clear the eyes of suppuration and crusts with an antiseptic solution or a decoction of chamomile. To do this, a cotton pad is dipped into the solution, and gently hold it from the outer edge of the eye to the inner. For each eye use a separate disk.

Opening the drops, you need to be careful - the tip of the dropper should not touch the eyes and the skin around, otherwise it will get pathogens, causing re-infection. The drug should be instilled between the eyeball and eyelid. After that, the child should blink for a uniform distribution of the drops on the mucous membrane. Repeat the same with the second eye.

Blot excess drug with a disposable cloth. After instillation, wash your hands again in order not to get infected with an infectious disease.

Is eye treatment effective with drops?

Drops - the main and most effective drug used in the treatment of many eye diseases in children. They act locally, directly on the affected organ, and, as a rule, do not penetrate into the general bloodstream. Properly selected ophthalmic drops are successfully fought by pathogens, perform the function of an antiseptic and do not bring trouble in the form of unwanted side effects.

We treat bacterial conjunctivitis

The most common form of conjunctivitis. To bring pathogenic bacteria on the shell of the eye can both the baby himself and the parents.

When children are actively exploring the surrounding space, keeping track of the clean hands of a child is difficult. Touching everything, the kid collects a lot of bacteria on his fingers, and then he can, for example, rub his eyes and “deliver” pathogens to the mucous membrane.

Parents can unknowingly not follow the rules of hygiene and wipe the child with one towel after washing and after washing, spreading bacteria from the excretion organs throughout the body.

Bacterial conjunctivitis can be recognized by the following symptoms:

  • Pain in the eye of the child. (The child rubs his eyes, there is a feeling of a foreign object in the eye),
  • Yellow peels appear on the eyelids,
  • Discharge from the eye suppuration / tearing (gray or yellow, seemingly cloudy and viscous, most often noticeable after sleep),
  • Agglomerated eyelids.

A newborn child does not have tears, therefore, with the appearance of any discharge from the eyes, it may be a sign of the development of conjunctivitis, which means that it is necessary to consult a doctor.

1. Drops Fucitalmik

This drug is a local antibiotic. Fucitalmic is a viscous white suspension. Due to this dosage form (viscosity), Fuzzitalmik is able to stay on conjunctiva for a long time.

The drug is used conjunctivally, that is buried in the conjunctival sac of the eye. Method of application: 1 drop twice a day during the week. If it does not help within 7 days, you need to revise the treatment.

An open bottle is stored no longer than a month.

The average price of Futsitalmik drops in pharmacies is 350 rubles.

2. Albucidine Drops (Sulfacyl Sodium)

Antimicrobial drug, which is an aqueous solution of sulfacetamide. For the treatment of children, only 20% solution is used (the dosage can be clarified at the pharmacy). Burning may be felt after instillation.

Albucid drip conjunctival sac 4-6 times a day 1-2 drops, pre-warming the bottle to room temperature.

An open bottle is stored for no longer than 4 weeks.

The average price of Albucidum drops in pharmacies is 55 rubles.

3. Vitabak Drops

Antimicrobial drug with a wide spectrum of action. Vitabak instilled 1 drop 2-6 times a day. The course of treatment is calculated for 10 days, but can be extended if there is such a need.

The average price of Vitabact in pharmacies is 250 rubles.

Types of eye drops for babies

Medicines for the treatment of eye inflammation have different pharmacological effects and differ in composition. According to this principle, they are divided into the following groups:

  • Antibacterial drugs are used to treat infections caused by bacteria. The active substance of this type of eye drop is either antibiotics or sulfonamides.
  • Antiseptic drops have a disinfecting effect. The range of their application is very wide: they treat and viral infections, and bacterial, and even fungal.
  • Antiviral preparations for newborns are based on interferon. Its action is to strengthen the body's defenses and increase the production of antibodies in the body.
  • Antihistamine drops help to deal with the symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis.

Albucidum (sodium sulfacyl)

These antibacterial drops can be applied from the first year of a baby’s life, but only as directed by a doctor. For children under one year, a 20% solution is released. Sulfanilamide, which is part of the drug, destroys the normal course of cellular processes of different types of bacteria, prevents their reproduction. As a result, they die.

The drug has been successfully used to treat purulent corneal ulcers, conjunctivitis, blenorrhea. Dosage for newborns is 2-3 drops in each eye up to 6 times per day.

The active substance tobramycin, which is part of the drug, belongs to the antibiotics of the aminoglycoside group. Drops are effective for blepharitis, bacterial conjunctivitis, barley. Usually, the doctor prescribes a fivefold use during the week.

The manual states that the use of Tobrex for children under one year has not been sufficiently studied. But the experience of pediatricians shows that the drug is quite effective and safe. Overdose can cause hearing loss, malfunction of the kidneys, respiratory system, so care must be taken.

These drops are distinguished by the fact that they act very quickly (10-15 minutes) and have a long therapeutic effect (from 4 to 6 hours). Ofloxacin, which is part of the drug, has a broad spectrum antimicrobial effect. The list of indications includes conjunctivitis (both bacterial and viral), barley, chlamydial infection, corneal ulcer.

Floksal recommended for children from a year, but in pediatrics use it even in maternity hospitals. The dosage is prescribed by the doctor individually. The term of application is 5-7 days.

Vitabact refers to the group of antiseptic drugs. It is effective in almost any eye disease in babies. Due to the fact that its impact is only local, it is recommended for children from birth. Vitabact is considered the best medicine for dacryocystitis in newborns (inflammation of the lacrimal sac).

The course of treatment should be at least 10 days, and the dosage depends on the severity of the disease. Usually prescribed from 2 to 6 times a day, 1 drop. The downside is the rather high price of the drug, but, according to parents, it is worth it. After opening the medicine should be stored no more than a month.

Due to its components, the list of actions of this pharmaceutical is quite wide:

  • antiviral,
  • antimicrobial,
  • regenerating
  • anesthetic,
  • immunomodulatory,
  • antihistamine.

The course of treatment can last up to a month, usually the drug is canceled by the doctor when the symptoms disappear. The dosage is 2-3 drops 6-8 times a day for the acute course of the disease, in the following days it is reduced to 2-3 times. Newborns, these droplets are most often prescribed for viral conjunctivitis.

The choice of medicines for newborns is quite wide, and it increases with the development of the pharmaceutical industry. The main thing is to choose the drug and its dosage in full compliance with the diagnosis, and only an ophthalmologist can do it.

We treat viral conjunctivitis

Viral conjunctivitis usually accompanies catarrhal viral diseases (ARVI, flu). The disease manifests itself in that, along with the symptoms of a cold, severe tearing begins, itching in the eyes. Unlike bacterial conjunctivitis, with a virus there is no purulent discharge, causing sticking of the eyelashes. Conjunctivitis begins with one eye, but soon switches to the second.

2. Drops Aktipol

Antiviral agent that stimulates the production of its own interferon. Aktipol quickly removes puffiness and heals the affected cornea of the eye. Actipol drip 3-8 times a day, 2 drops in both eyes. Even with the disappearance of conjunctivitis symptoms, the drug should be used in a full course from a week to 10 days.

The average price of Aktipol in the pharmacy is 150 rubles.

3. Ointment Zovirax

A strip of ointment length of 10 mm should be placed under the lower eyelid in the lower conjunctival sac. Apply 5 times a day every 4 hours. Make treatment for another 3 days after healing.

The average price of 300 rubles

Treatment board

Even if only one eye is affected with conjunctivitis, you need to bury the drops in both: in the patient for treatment, in the healthy for prevention. Moreover, during instillation it is impossible to touch the cornea with a pipette. If this happens, the pipette needs to be processed before the next instillation. This measure is necessary in order to pipette not to spread the infection and not to provoke reinfection.

  1. As soon as you notice signs of conjunctivitis, on the first day, wash the eyes of the child every two hours: if there are crusts on your eyes, then remove them with a cotton pad / cotton swab dipped in furacilin or decoction of chamomile. Rinse each eye with a new cotton pad. (See detailHow to care for the eyes of a child)
  2. The following days, wipe the eyes 2 times a day (during the week),
  3. Choose a drop or ointment from the list above and apply according to the instructions,
  4. Do not forget that you need to drip or smear both eyes, even if the disease is on one. It is important,
  5. In no case with conjunctivitis, do not close your eyes with a bandage! Under the dressing, conditions are created for the reproduction of bacteria.

Toddlers transfer the dropping of the drops into the eyes calmly enough, so if you start the treatment in time, the conjunctivitis will quickly back off and will not annoy the mother and the baby.

Indications for use of eye drops for newborns

Neonatal conjunctivitis is an infection that causes inflammation of the conjunctiva during the first four weeks of a child’s life. The conjunctiva is a layer of thin tissue that covers the inside of the eyelid and the white part of the eye. For the development of inflammation it is necessary that the bacteria fall on the unprotected mucous membrane. Frequent pathogens of such inflammation in newborns are chlamydia and gonococci. The only way for newborns to get chlamydia or gonorrhea is if the mother has this infection during childbirth. Of newborns born to mothers with untreated gonorrhea, 1 out of 3 newborns are at risk of having gonorrheal conjunctivitis, which carries a high risk of blindness. Left untreated, gonorrhea can begin to cause vision loss in just 24 hours. The risk of a newborn who received chlamydia from an infected mother ranges from 8 to 44%. Chlamydia has a low risk of blindness, but can still cause eye damage and, as a rule, loss of vision if not treated.

But it is also believed that other bacteria cause 30-50% of eye infections, as well as gonococcus and chlamydia. These include: Staphylococcus aureus, Pneumococcus, Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus groups A and B, Corynebacterium species, Moraxella catarrhalis. These bacteria live on the skin, lungs, vagina, stomach and intestines. Medical personnel who care for newborns may have the above bacteria and have no symptoms. This means that every time a new person has contact with a child, the risk of infection of the newborn increases. This proves the high need for prophylactic use of eye drops in newborns immediately after birth. These drops are specifically designed to prevent bacterial eye infections.

The goal of prophylactic antibiotic eye drops is to prevent infection of the tissues surrounding the eye caused by bacteria that may be present in the birth canal. Bacteria can be common bacteria or bacteria associated with venereal diseases. Bacteria associated with gonorrhea and chlamydia can cause permanent visual impairment, and can also spread throughout the body, causing other serious problems.

Within an hour after birth, newborns are usually given antibiotic eye drops to prevent eye infections. The use of eye antibiotics to newborns, both in the form of a solution and in the form of an ointment, is now considered the standard of care in most developed countries and is actually enshrined in law in many states. The names of the most commonly used drops are Levomycetin, Tobrex, Floxal and Albucid or Sulfacyl sodium. The use of these drops with a prophylactic purpose in Ukraine is regulated by recommendations and protocols.

There are also viral infections of the eye and conjunctivitis caused by blocked outflow of tears due to a blockage in the nasolacrimal canal. In such cases, eye drops for children with redness, conjunctivitis, inflammation can be used all of the above, as well as some others - Ophthalmoferon, Collargol, Okomistin, Tsipromed, Emoksipin.

Many of this type of drops does not have a fundamental difference in use. The only thing that distinguishes these drops is the composition. Therefore, if your child has any eye problems, the doctor may advise you any of these drops.
