What helps Pyrantel? According to the instructions, the drug is prescribed for the treatment and prevention of helminthic invasions:

It is used not only for the treatment of helminthiasis, but also for the prevention of parasitic diseases. In a single dose, it is necessary to take medicine not only for the sick person, but also for the members of his family. Preferred forms: tablets - adults, Pirantel suspension - for children. In addition, it is desirable to carry out sanitary treatment of the room, give worms to pets. To check it is necessary to pass stool tests.

Instructions for use Pyrantel dosage

Tablets are taken orally during a meal or immediately after a meal. It is recommended to chew well or chop, drink clean water.

In case of ascariasis and enterobiasis, the instruction recommends using Pirantel once at the rate of 10 mg of the drug per 1 kg of body weight. In some cases, the use of the drug is acceptable in the minimum dose of 5 mg / kg.

When ankilostomidoze administered at a dose of 10 mg / kg / day for 3 days.

In severe forms of necatoria (massive invasions of Necator americanus), it is prescribed at a dose of 20 mg / kg / day for 2 days.

Instructions for suspension Pirantel for children

Suspension is used mainly for removing worms in babies, although it can be used by adults. The drug is available in a bottle of dark glass with a measuring spoon. Suspension acts mainly in the intestines, therefore, unlike tablets, it is much easier to tolerate, since it has a milder effect.

Suspension is taken orally during or after a meal. Immediately before using the vial with the drug shaken to obtain a homogeneous suspension.

Recommended instruction dosages of Pirantel suspensions for children:

  • aged 6 months to 2 years: 125 mg each (2.5 ml, or ½ measuring cup),
  • between the ages of 2 and 6 years: 250 mg (5 ml, or 1 measuring cup),
  • from 6 to 12 years old: 500 mg each (10 ml, or 2 measuring cups),
  • at the age of 12 and adults weighing less than 75 kg: 750 mg (15 ml, or 3 measuring cups),
  • adults weighing more than 75 kg: 1000 mg (20 ml, 4 measuring cups).

In order to prevent re-infection, the suspension is re-administered after 21 days after the first dose.

For massive invasions of Necator americanus, a dose of 20 mg / kg body weight is recommended for 2 days.

Side effects

The instruction warns about the possibility of the development of the following side effects in the appointment of Pirantel:

  • nausea, vomiting,
  • lack of appetite,
  • diarrhea,
  • stomach aches and cramps
  • headache,
  • dizziness,
  • drowsiness or insomnia

Contraindications

It is contraindicated to appoint Pirantel in the following cases:

  • Hypersensitivity to the active substance and any other components of the tool,
  • Liver failure,
  • Age of the child up to 6 months.

With caution - pregnancy and lactation, liver failure.

It should not be administered simultaneously with piperazine (weakening action). Increases theophylline concentration in plasma.

Overdose

In case of overdose, the following symptoms may occur - nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia. It should be borne in mind that Pyrantel is poorly absorbed in the body, causing signs of intoxication to occur very rarely, even with a significant overdose.

Gastric lavage is prescribed, there is no specific antidote. It is important to control the function of blood vessels, heart, respiratory system.

Analogs Pirantel, price in pharmacies

If necessary, you can replace Pyrantel with an analogue for the active substance - these are drugs:

Antihelminthic effect:

Choosing analogues it is important to understand that the instructions for use of the Pirantel, the price and reviews, do not apply to drugs of similar action. It is important to consult a doctor and not to make an independent replacement of the drug.

Price in pharmacies in Moscow and Russia: Pirantel tablets 250 mg 3 pcs. - from 24 to 49 rubles, the price of Pirantel suspension is 250 mg / 5 ml 15 ml - from 33 to 60 rubles, according to 783 pharmacies.

pharmachologic effect

Antihelminthic drug of a wide spectrum of action. It causes neuromuscular blockade of sensitive worms. Active against Enterobius vermicularis, Ascaris lumbriocoides, Ancylostoma duodenale, Necator americanus, Trichostrongylus orientalis, Trichostrongylus colubriformis. It acts on both mature and immature individuals of both sexes, does not affect the larvae in the migration stage.

Pharmacokinetics

After oral administration, pyrantel is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. After taking a single dose of 10 mg / kg of body weight, the concentration of pyrantel in plasma is 0.005-0.13 µg / ml for 1-3 hours.

There is no data on the distribution of pyrantel in tissues and biological fluids of the body (theoretically, the absorption of the active substance is minimal), as well as on the possibility of excretion of the active substance in breast milk.

Metabolism and excretion

Pyrantel absorbed into the systemic circulation is partially metabolized in the liver to N-methyl-1,3-propanediamine. 93% of the accepted dose is excreted unchanged with feces, about 7% with urine unchanged or as a metabolite.

Composition and release form

"Pirantel pills" since 1970 sold as an antiparasitic agent. The drug is available without a prescription. Pyrantel Suspension was approved in 1971 and is also widely used in veterinary medicine. "Pirantel syrup" is assigned exclusively to children.

Pyrantel is a pyrantel pamoate, a white-yellow powder that is practically insoluble in water, a derivative of tetrahydropyrimidine and thiophene.

Pharmacological properties

The drug is indicated for the treatment of Ancylostoma duodenale infections and other nematodes in humans and domestic animals. The combination of pyrantel with pamic acid inhibits the enzyme cholinesterase and causes the depolarization of neuromuscular fibers, which causes spastic paralysis.

Pyrantel and its analogs are attributed to depolarizing blockers of neuromuscular synapses with a de-worming effect. Pills from the strong worms "Pirantel" cause a strong and persistent activation of nicotinic receptors, which leads to static paralysis of the worm. The drug also inhibits the cholinesterase enzyme, therefore it is effective against earthworms, nematodes and pinworms.

Since pyrantel (suspension or tablets for children and adults) and piperazine are antagonists in relation to their neuromuscular effects in parasites, they are not combined in clinical practice. Pyrantel has a short-term effect. The drug is completely excreted from the body by feces and urine within 3-4 days. High doses may cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache, fever of pharmacological origin, hypersensitivity, drowsiness, insomnia, and rash.

After ingestion, pyrantel is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. The maximum concentration in plasma is observed within 1-3 hours after administration. In the body, the minimum amount of absorbed drug is partially metabolized in the liver. Elimination occurs mainly through feces, in which about 50% of the dose taken is excreted unchanged. Another 7% can be found in the urine, both unchanged and in the form of metabolites.

Contraindications, side effects, overdose

Pyrantel should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to the drug or liver damage. Little is known about the effects of pyrantel during pregnancy and lactation, so the drug should not be used during this time.

Common side effects:

  • Cephalgia
  • Abdominalgia
  • Dyspepsia
  • Enhancement of liver enzymes (transaminases)
  • Anorexia
  • Insomnia
  • Exanthema
  • Fatigue.

In the dropping form of pyrantel, babies can be treated. However, it is not recommended to give it to children under the age of 6 months, since there are no studies. Use at this age is at the discretion of the physician.

No clinically significant drug interactions with other drugs have been identified. Overdose cases are relatively rare, there is no specific antidote.

The main analogues of "Pirantel": "Gelmintoks" and "Nemotsid".

Indications for use Pyrantel

The effectiveness of Pirantel has been proven in relation to the following parasites - pinworms, intestinal, roundworm, hookworm, etc.

Indications for use Pyrantel:

How do worms come out after taking Pirantel? Paralyzed parasites are expelled from the intestinal lumen with feces. The "spent" drug is excreted unchanged or as a metabolite with fecal matter and urine.

Analogs Pirantel, a list of drugs

On the basis of the active component, such analogs of Pirantel - Gelmintoks, Nemotsid are distinguished.

By antiparasitic effect similar drugs are considered:

  1. Dekaris,
  2. Albendazole
  3. Nemozol
  4. Vermox,
  5. Piperazin and others.

Important - the instructions for use of the Pirantel, the price and reviews to analogues do not apply and can not be used as a guide for the use of drugs of similar composition or action. All therapeutic appointments should be done by a doctor. When replacing Pirantel with an analogue, it is important to get expert advice, it may be necessary to change the course of therapy, dosages, etc. Do not self-medicate!

Children suffer from helminthic invasions more often, so the symptoms of vomiting in the morning, as well as coughing for a long time are a good reason to go to a parasitologist, especially if there are domestic animals in the family. Of inexpensive, but effective drugs, the best remedy against helminthic invasion is considered to be Pirantel.

Dosage Form

Suspension for oral administration, 250 mg / 5 ml

1 ml of suspension contains

active ingredient - Pyrantel 50.000 mg

(in the form of pyrantel embonate 144.000 mg),

The suspension is light yellow with a characteristic odor.

Separation into the liquid layer and sediment is allowed, after stirring a homogeneous suspension is formed.

Dosage and administration

Inside on time or after meals.

In enterobiasis and ascariasis (also in mixed invasions by these parasites): adults and children, at the rate of 10 mg / kg of body weight, once.

Depending on the age and body weight of the patient, the following doses are applied:

Dose, mg

from 6 months to 2 years

over 12 years old and adults weighing up to 75 kg

adults weighing more than 75 kg

5 mg of Pirantel per 1 kg of body weight, once.

In case of hookworm, the treatment is longer:

10 mg / kg body weight per day for 3 days or 20 mg / kg body weight

per day for 2 days, one time

5 ml of suspension (1 measure) - contains 250 mg of pyrantel.

Shake well before use.

No need to use laxatives.

With enterobiasis, the whole family is treated.

After passing 14 days after the application of mandatory parasitological control studies.

special instructions

Use caution in children under 2 years of age, in the presence of anemia, in exhausted patients, as well as in the case of abnormal liver function (causes a temporary increase in aspartate transaminase).

In the treatment of enterobiasis, all persons living together should be treated at the same time. Careful hygiene (cleaning of residential premises and cleaning clothes for the destruction of helminth eggs) serves as a prevention of reinfection.

Due to the fact that the drug contains a solution of sorbitol, it should not be administered to patients with rare heredity fructose intolerance. The drug may have a mild laxative effect.

Gestation period and lactation

Studies on animals did not reveal the negative effect of pyrantel on the fetus. However, due to the lack of controlled studies on the use of Pyrantel during pregnancy, the drug should be prescribed to pregnant women only if the intended benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus.

Data on the use of pyrantel in lactating women is missing.

Pyrantel is not recommended for women who are breastfeeding. If necessary, the use of the drug during lactation should decide on the termination of breastfeeding.

Features of the influence of the drug on the ability to drive a vehicle and potentially dangerous machinery

Studies on the effect of the drug on the ability to drive vehicles and maintain mechanical equipment have not been conducted.

Overdose

Symptoms: visual impairment, disorientation, dizziness, fainting or dizziness when rising from a prone or sitting position, increased sweating, not previously observed feelings of tiredness or weakness, irregular pulse, muscle spasms, tremor and weakness, exhaustion, asphyxia (difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness).

Treatment: there is no specific antidote. In case of overdose, it is necessary to take symptomatic and supportive measures: gastric lavage, the use of laxatives, the provision of airway and breathing support, support for blood pressure.
